Specifically, the Axim x51v. Amazing device. No, I don’t have one, but I’ve read the great reviews on Amazon, and read the specs on the Dell Website.

The previous post, I recommended getting a laptop, if there’s the least chance of you travelling and needing mobile Internet access. But this beauty will definitely do in a pinch. (Especially for stuff like Email, or you want to use Yahoo maps for directions)

Dell Axim

I probably won’t be getting one seen, because I’m finally settled and don’t need to move and don’t really need to travel, and so I don’t need portable Internet. However I wish I had an excuse to make the plunge, because it’s such a nice machine. It’s one of those products where I have no doubt I’d be getting the best of the class as far as an ultra-portable computer
The things that get in my way of getting it.

1. I don’t really need the Internet access anymore (even when I lounge on a Sat morning, at a coffee joint, I’d rather not have internet access, because I’d rather work on an algorithm for a program I’m writing, or ideas on a web page, or writing a list of things to accomplish etc..)

2. The AXIM is a Microsoft machine, i.e. Pocket PC. I’ve already spent a few bucks already as a 6+ year Palmpilot owner. (especially my semi-recent purchase of KeySuite which allows me to sync Outlook to my Palm)

3. The battery life is not very impressive (for obvious reasons). If you have an 8hr/day job, you literally have to have a charger at work, if you don’t want it to go dead.

My compromise: The Palm Z22

Since I can’t keep my Palm Vx very long, without its slow speed driving me up the wall, I will probably end up getting the Z22, the sub-$100 PDA from PalmOne. It’s many times faster than the VX and much more memory, so even that will be a relief.

I just don’t like the fact that the reviews says that sometimes there’s no response when you hit the silkscreen button on the Z22, or try to write on it, but you get what you pay for it, I guess.

Update: 12/19/2006 I’ve had the Z22 for a couple of months and it’s a nice little unit. Very solid, simple, dependable. It’s perfect for what I need it for: A portable copy of my Outlook stuff! (However if I win a sweepstakes gift certificate or something from Dell or Amazon or somewhere, I will use it to buy the Axim just for the fun of it. It’s a beauty.)

Plus with the Axim, I can write software for it using mobile dotnet. My attempt at palm programming was sad: search “netsearchutil” at palmgear.com
